I must apologize for adding this so late in the game. The babies are already a week old, but here's their story:
I was sent to the hospital on Tuesday, July 6th for 24 hour monitoring for my blood pressure. My doctor and all the nurses there figured I'd be there for a few hours & then be released once it went down. So, Matt went back to work & I settled in for a "nap." Then, about an hour later, my BP spiked and it wouldn't go down so they said, "Call Matt, the only way to get rid of preeclampsia is to remove the placenta. You're going to have your babies today!"
So, Matt was sent into full panic mode, rushing around the house for my bags & corralling the dogs. Meanwhile, they were prepping me &, once he got there, the c-section began. It was all so fast. I called him somewhere between 4:00-4:30 and the babies arrived by 5:30. It was nuts!
The official info is that Adeline Rose was born at 5:25 PM and weighed 4 lb. 13 oz. She was 18 inches long. Aiden Ryan was born at 5:26 PM and weighed 5 lb. 15 oz. He was 19 inches long.
Immediately following the surgery, they put me on magnesium sulfate (muscle relaxant) to make sure I didn't have a BP seizure. That stuff made me sicker than a dog & totally out of it. I was on it for another 24 hours in which I have a fuzzy memory of feeding & holding the twins. It really wasn't until Wednesday evening that I was actually able to focus on them & get a good look. In some ways the meds were good-- I really could not stress about feeding or caring for the twins so it helped me settle in at my own pace. However, it was much nicer actually being able to be present for it! :)
Everything has been going well. One of my main concerns was feeding and they are little champions. I was able to tandem feed even in my drugged state-- that's how easily they took to it. We are supplementing with formula after each feeding to help them build up some weight, but they are good little eaters & have made it very, very easy on me.
Otherwise, we are establishing some patterns and trying to get the supplies we need. We had a lot of preemie stuff given to us, but we still are missing some key items. But, so far, we've managed. :)
Fortunately, my mom was on her way down on the very day they were born so she was able to see them right away & has been a huge help in letting us get some much needed rest. Our first night had it's moments, but was pretty good. We just take a deep breath & realize we are all just getting to know each other. And what fun that is! They are absolutely precious & I'm loving every minute of it. Matt has taken to fatherhood like a duck to water and has done a fantastic job of taking care of me AND the babies.
We are very blessed in so many ways & we thank all of you for all your prayers, love, support, & congratulations!
